Best Bluebell Walks in Northamptonshire

The Best Bluebell Walks in Northamptonshire
Springtime in Northamptonshire is a magical season, especially when the bluebells are in full bloom. The bluebell season typically runs from late April through early May, with the peak bloom happening in the first two weeks of May. It’s the perfect time to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the county, where woodland floors transform into stunning carpets of blue.
As a family portrait photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing many families amidst the breathtaking bluebells, creating memories that last a lifetime. All the photos featured in this guide were taken by me during past shoots in these beautiful locations, and I’d love to help you create your own timeless memories!
No bluebells were harmed in the taking of these photos! I use techniques like getting down low to make it look like children are sitting in the bluebells, all while staying on the designated paths to preserve these stunning wildflowers.
If you’re interested in booking your own family photoshoot in the bluebells – or any other stunning location – feel free to reach out to me. I’d love to capture your family’s story in nature’s most beautiful season.

1. EVERDON STUBBS
Everdon Stubbs is a beautiful ancient woodland, home to a diverse mix of English and sessile oak, lowland birch, sweet chestnut, and sycamore. In spring, the forest floor comes alive with vibrant bluebells and rare wild daffodils. The northern boundary holds a fascinating glimpse into the past—a prehistoric Saxon burial site—along with other intriguing archaeological features scattered throughout the woodland.
2. BADBY WOODS
Badby Woods is a historic and ecologically significant area. Covering approximately 117 acres, this ancient semi-natural woodland has been forested for over 700 years and is recognized as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The woodland is predominantly composed of pedunculate oak, with a diverse ground flora that includes creeping soft-grass, wood anemone, yellow archangel, and bluebells. In spring, the forest floor is famously carpeted with vibrant bluebells, attracting numerous visitors.
3. SALCEY FOREST
Salcey Forest, located near Northampton, is a historic woodland renowned for its stunning bluebell displays each spring. As the season unfolds, the forest floor becomes a vibrant sea of blue, offering a picturesque setting for visitors. The Woodpecker Trail is a 6-mile route encircles the entire forest and is particularly noted for its bluebell displays during springtime. As you meander through oak and conifer woodlands, you’ll be treated to the delicate beauty of bluebells lining the path.
4. HARLESTONE FIRS
Harlestone Firs, located just northwest of Northampton, is a cherished woodland spanning approximately 300 acres. Owned by the Althorp Estate, the childhood home of Princess Diana, this forest is a favoured destination for walkers, dog enthusiasts, joggers, and mountain bikers. During spring, Harlestone Firs offers a picturesque setting with its diverse flora. Visitors can enjoy scenic paths through the woods and views over the countryside as they make their way around.
5. BUCKNELL WOODS
Bucknell Woods is located near Silverstone, it is a serene forest offering a rich blend of natural beauty and biodiversity. As a remnant of the ancient Whittlewood Forest, it provides visitors with a tranquil setting for various outdoor activities. Some paths can become muddy after rainfall, so appropriate footwear is recommended. While the main trails are relatively flat and wide, making them accessible for most visitors, they may not be entirely suitable for pushchairs due to uneven surfaces in certain areas.
6. HAZELBOROUGH FOREST
Backing onto Bucknell Woods, Hazelborough Forest features a network of grassy rides and paths suitable for leisurely walks. Beyond the enchanting bluebells, Hazelborough Wood is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. The ancient oak trees provide habitat for various bird species, including migratory birds such as the blackcap, wood warbler, nightingale, and chiffchaff. Additionally, the woodland is a stronghold for the Wood White butterfly, making it a significant site for butterfly enthusiasts.
